Are you curious about the history of your Seattle neighborhood? Our series of online guides featuring resources in the archives by City Council district is a great place to start!
Structured around the themes of Early Records, Parks and Recreation, Infrastructure and Public Works, Neighborhood Development and Community Services, and Legislative History, the guides include topics like the aftermath of the Great Fire, the development of water supply and sewer systems, housing, public health, and much more.
These aren’t complete lists of everything in the archives for each district, but our hope is that they can be good starting points for exploring more. Each guide highlights a sampling of records in multiple formats, with links to collection descriptions and digital content.
For example, Infrastructure and Public Works sections highlight engineering records documenting projects like bridge construction, sidewalk paving, street widening work, and more. Neighborhood records give insight into both departmental priorities and community-driven projects and events supported by the city over time. Parks records include maps, photos, and textual records about parks, playfields, and open space.

Archived moving images are sprinkled throughout the guides – for example, District 6 includes a film showing a Pony Club picnic at Woodland Park Zoo from about 1935. District 3 links to a 2002 episode of Seattle Channel’s Neighborhood News detailing recent upgrades to parks and streetscapes as part of the neighborhood planning process throughout the Central Area, First Hill, and Capitol Hill.
We hope you’ll use these guides to explore your district!
